Be on the show
Introduction
Thanks for your interest in coming on HE Enabled! This page has all of the information you need to make an informed decision about coming on the show.
If you want to be a guest on HE Enabled, or have any questions, please get in touch via the contact form.
Who can be a guest on HE Enabled?
Anyone with lived experience of disability, neurodivergence, and long-term health conditions in the UK higher education sector is welcome to be a guest on the show.
- Anyone with lived experience of disability, neurodivergence, and/or long-term health conditions in UK Higher Education (past or present). You do not need a diagnosis to come on the show.
- You can be from any university/HEI and in any position (professional services staff, student, academic, etc.).
- I particularly want to have conversations with international students/staff, wheelchair users, degree apprentices, and those from the global majority. However, anyone with a story to share is always welcome.
How does the recording process work?
Step 1: Review the Default Questions (Google Docs link).
These questions are the baseline that I use for every guest. Please read and review these questions before applying to be a guest on the contact form. The next step will personalise these questions to you, so please do not worry if they are not a perfect fit. This is especially true for non-students!
Step 2: Adjustments, calendar invites, and photos.
Once we arrange a time/date to record, a calendar invite will be sent over with a Teams link. This will be used whenever we are calling or recording for the show. I will also ask for the following:
-
Any reasonable adjustments you may need (processing time, rest breaks, and questions at least 24h in advance are in place by default).
-
A photo which I can use for socials (it does not have to be a photo of you if you are not comfortable with that; anything within reason will do).
Step 3: Creating your tailored questions.
There are two options available for creating podcast questions:
-
Option 1. I develop the interview questions based on information that you provide to me/ is publicly available (I use LinkedIn profiles for this). This approach is less involved and energy-consuming than option 2, and is great if you want to provide a general overview of your experiences.
-
Option 2. If you have a particular story that you want to tell, I am happy to schedule a call for us to come up with the questions together. This is a little more involved, but is very helpful if you want to base an episode around a particular narrative or event.
Step 4: Recording
HE Enabled is an audio-only podcast. Recording sessions tend to be between 45 minutes and an hour. Note that we may overrun a bit if we take some tangents or wish to chat before/after the show! Important note: Please read the recording guidance document (Google Doc) in advance of coming on the show as it covers key technical information. Not reading it may delay the recording process as technical difficulties arise!
Step 5: Titles and episode release
Once everything is edited, I will run a provisional title by you. You are welcome to approve it or suggest edits. The episode will come out on a Sunday in the near future. I release episodes in the order in which they are recorded, so there may be a small delay between an episode being recorded and released. If there is a queue for episode releases, your episode will be made available on Patreon a week before its general release. I will email you the .wav file to allow you to listen to the episode in advance if this is the case.
FAQ's
I've never done a podcast before! Is this for me?
I’ve interviewed nearly 50 people to date and it’s been a blast. HE Enabled is a joy to host because of its amazing diversity of guests. It's also the first podcast appearance for many of them; I have learned through the onboarding process that many of them don’t feel like their story is ‘interesting enough’. I promise you it is, please don’t let that deter you!
